Agribulk
Leaders in agri-food product traffic
The Port of Tarragona maintains an indisputable leadership in the movement of agri-food products, both in Spain and the Mediterranean, contributing to this economic activity due to specialised services and their infrastructures that encourage importing.
The movement of agri-food products is one of the foremost activities in the Port of Tarragona, both in terms of its volume - about 5 million tonnes a year on average - and for their facilities and economic impact in the hinterland.
In order to provide storage for these products, the Port has 260,000 sq. metres of covered floor-space, a figure only comparable to the capabilities of our Port for storing bulk liquids.
Their infrastructures of specialisation in agri-food traffic help the Port of Tarragona to work with a wide variety of agri-food products and by-products (over 60), which is why our Port is situated in a very prominent position compared to other European ports.

In order to handle such cargos, the Port’s various terminals and facilities are equipped with highly specialised machinery such as high capacity cranes, unloading conveyor belts connected to different silos, stackers, special hoppers, etc.
In the same way, the Port and the companies that operate it, aid the unloading of products in various ways:
From the hopper to the customer
Direct to silo
Direct to mechanised warehouse
Direct to conventional warehouse
And in terms of respect for the environment, all the facilities have environmental pollution control systems and safety plans.
Leaders in the movement of agri-food products
The Port of Tarragona has historically been the leader in the movements of cereals and flours, and feed and fodder, on a national level.
The sector contributes 9.2% of the national economy’s Gross Value Added (GVA), higher than that of the European Union, which stands at 3.6%. Spain is the fourth largest contributor to the European agri-food sector at 12% and is only surpassed by France, Germany and Italy.

We import in order to supply an extensive hinterland
The Port of Tarragona receives agri-food products from the major producing countries such as the Ukraine, Romania, Brasil and the United States.
The distribution of these products covers a vast hinterland, which includes the whole of Catalonia, Aragon and Navarre, and much of Eastern Castile, where more than 40% of the total production of feedstuff in Spain is manufactured.
The products are imported via the Port of Tarragona, and from there are transported to areas where the food for animal feeding is manufactured, such as the factories of Lleida, Saragossa, Girona and Huesca.
Agrifood, the international event
The Port of Tarragona has an important presence in the European agri-food sector. It participates in the most outstanding international events such as the European cereal exchanges. It also organises a biennial international congress, Agrifood International Congress, that brings together all the most important actors from the sector. The congress facilitates the commercial exchange of different operators and updates the latest advances in meat production.
Agrifood has become a benchmark international event that began as a response to the demand of the sector for a forum of the highest level in which to exchange knowledge and information, without losing its commercial nature.
SEA| Agri-bulk Delivery System
It is a system to make it easier for transport companies to pick up cargos from the agri-bulk terminals that the Tarragona Port Authority places at the disposal of the different agents involved.
