Safety and self-protection
The Port of Tarragona has a Self-Protection Plan (PAU) integrated into its security and emergency management strategy, which establishes clear protocols to respond to risk situations and coordinate intervention teams. This plan includes an emergency room and has been presented in conferences aimed at the port community and stakeholders, where, based on real simulations, the different bodies have explained their actions and needs, reinforcing operational cooperation between agents involved in emergency management. The Port is considered a pioneer in these processes within the state port system, with a comprehensive approach that promotes efficiency, sustainability and the protection of people and infrastructures.
In addition, the Port is committed to technological innovation as part of its security and self-protection policy, including the use of drones for support and surveillance tasks that complement emergency management and the detection of possible risks such as gases or complex incidents. These tools not only expand the capacity to act within the port enclosure, but also strengthen cooperation between bodies and their response to emergency situations, thus consolidating an updated and proactive safety culture.

Use of drons in the Port
Port Tarragona is consolidated as a pioneering port and state reference in the use of drones, being the first port of general interest with its own unit, operational since 2021 and with recurring flights since 2023. It has a advanced fleet of drones, trained pilots and real-time image integration systems in control and emergency centers. In addition, it acts as a test bench for innovation with Ports 4.0 projects. This leadership was reinforced in November 2025, when Puertos del Estado organized in Tarragona the first day on the use of drones in the port system of general interest.

ISO 22320
First port of the state port system to obtain the Emergency Management certificate based on the international standard ISO 22320
The Port Authority of Tarragona is a state pioneer in safety and innovation
The renewal of the certification ISO 22320:2018 until 2028 reinforce the leadership of the Port of Tarragona in security and innovation. The APT has pioneered the management and coordination of services with different emergency services, including new technologies such as drones, while already working on a new Self-Protection Plan.
This certification, audited by AENOR, makes the Port of Tarragona a safety benchmark. Its initial achievement, in January 2022, already marked the organization's commitment to continuous improvement, and the renewal consolidates this commitment.
AENOR’s audit evaluates the port’s comprehensive emergency management system, including the self-protection plan, the maritime interior plan, safety training, drills and exercises, as well as fire systems. This reinforces the positioning of the port as a benchmark in prevention and response to possible incidents.
The standard is a compilation of the best global practices in the field of comprehensive emergency management with the aim of establishing the order and organizational control of structures and procedures, decision making, traceability and information management.
The ISO 22320 certification means a guarantee and commitment of the Port for the safety of people, infrastructures, activities and the environment.
