The Tarragona Art Centre is exhibiting the 3rd Video Creation Award at Tinglado 2, promoted by the Art Centre Network, Arts Santa Mònica, the Department of Culture of the Catalan Autonomous Government and LOOP Barcelona.
Taking as its starting point the anatomy lessons learnt from Renaissance and Baroque painting, "Cos social " (social body) establishes itself as a great three-dimensional device that turns back on itself and emanates from the body and its immanence.
Based on the audiovisual medium rooted in performance, the gaze is directed towards the individual as a social instrument, although the project also takes an interest in the body and its reliance on the place it occupies in the world. At the same time, it suggests the effects of power over the subject and affections as the effects of language on the body.
Joan Morey is the selected artist in the 3rd Video Creation Award organised by the Network of Visual Art Centres of Catalonia, Arts Santa Mònica and LOOP Barcelona.
His project COS SOCIAL [Lliçó d'anatomia] (SOCIAL BODY [anatomy lesson]), conceived as a video-performance, examines the social construction of the body in contemporary Western culture and its impact on the field of performance art. Based on a review of the theoretical approaches to the sociology of the body, the project will resurrect the lessons of anatomy in baroque painting and its performativity by contrasting two fundamental elements: the body (of the performer) and the stage (on which the action is carried out).
COS SOCIAL [Lliçó d'anatomia] seeks to organise, analyse and set out the performance codes of a work of art by researching the genealogy of the medium that determines it. In fact, the subtitle of the project might as well be "Lesson in the anatomy [of the performance]" since one of the goals of the artist is to analyse the grammar of the performance, in particular that which puts the main focus on the body and its translation into the language of video-creation for the screen.
