Service description

The term bunker is the English generic word referring to marine fuels used by ships. In turn, the concept bunkering consists in supplying fuel to the boats, an action that can be developed in the Port of Tarragona in different formats.

Ship to ship (STS)

Fuel supply system from one tanker to another ship. It can be carried out on the same dock or at anchor, meaning that it is not necessary for the ship to dock at the port.

Truck to ship (TTS)

It is the type of supply that tankers are used to transport and supply fuel to the ship. Tank trucks are located on the dock, next to the ship they are connected to.

Advantages bunkering Port Tarragona

In order to encourage the uptake, loyalty and growth of maritime traffic and services that help the economic and social development of the port, all ships that provide provisioning services are subject to a 40% rebate on the vessel fee (T-1) from the first scalethey carry out.

The Port of Tarragona stands out for being the only port in the Spanish territory on the Mediterranean façade in which the service of fuel supply to anchoring is allowed. Maritime Captaincy, according to the characteristics of each vessel, defines requirements and limitations that are necessary to ensure maritime safety.

New operations with new fuels 

The European Union, through Regulation 2021/1119 of the European Parliament and the Council of 30 June 2021, which establishes the structure to achieve climate neutrality and amends the regulations, and the EU emissions trading scheme (RCDE EU); and the International Maritime Organization, through the MARPOL Convention and the Marine Ecosystem Protection Committees, seek to reduce European emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and 80%, if not climate neutrality, by 2050 by 877193. These results are acquired thanks to an equitable and fair transition, maintaining competitiveness and innovation; betting on the's safe, clean, green and quality energy and ensuring the rights of people working in the marine sector.

The Port of Tarragona is positioned as reference port for being a port for supplying alternative fuels to traditional ones in the coming years.& nbsp;The experience in jet liquid traffic, the presence of top-level facilities for the management of these products and the existence of alternative fuel production projects in the area make Tarragona an attractive port for opportunities in this area. Metanol, ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels, synthetic fuels or liquefied natural gas may be alternative options in the Port of Tarragona.
