The Port of Tarragona consolidates its position as a benchmark port in fruit traffic at a European level at Fruit Logistics, the leading international trade fair in the sector

Tarragona’s infrastructure was present at the fair, accompanied by Fruport, the company holding the fruit terminal concession, and Arola Aduanas y Consignaciones

The Port of Tarragona once again participated in Fruit Logistica, the leading international trade fair in the fruit and vegetables sector, which was held in Berlin.

The representatives of the Port were accompanied by representatives of the company holding the fruit terminal concession, Fruport, and various shipping agents such as Arola Aduanas y Consignaciones.

During the fair they took advantage of the opportunity to visit the Port’s regular clients in this sector in order to consolidate current cargoes and obtain new ones. The Tarragona infrastructure makes it a benchmark port in fruit importing traffic at a European level, and the aim was to strengthen trade links with logistics operators, fruit importers, shipping companies that operate regularly in Tarragona and the various companies related to the sector.

With an average annual movement of some 160,000 tonnes of fruit (12,000 in exports and 148,000 in imports), the Port of Tarragona has trade relationships with 28 countries from all over the world. A sound point of reference at the international level as well, it has achieved a progressive positioning in the ranking of Spanish ports, and year after year guarantees good results despite the economic context.

Main types of fruit: pineapples, bananas and kiwi fruit

The main fruit moved at the Tarragona facilities are pineapples and bananas (77,000 tonnes/year), coming mainly from Costa Rica and Colombia and arriving weekly at the port terminal, in addition to kiwi fruit (40,000 tonnes/year), coming from New Zealand.

In addition, the Port of Tarragona is an out-of-season fruit distribution hub with other Mediterranean ports.

The specialty of the port infrastructure of Tarragona is the unloading of reefer vessels. At the Fruport terminal value added operations are performed - picking, sorting, temperature control – that maintain the quality standards required by the industry, at the same time as storage, distribution and logistics operations.
