Presentation of the book 'Patterns and pilot of the marine tramp of Tarragona. Second third of the 19th century'
Author: Josep Maria Sanet
Port Archive conference room
The book, a continuation of the work by the same author: Patrons i pilots de la marina mercant de Tarragona (Primer terç del segle XIX) is a historical examination of the similarities between the Tarragona seamen who lived during the second third of the 19th century.
Although sail power was used until well into the 20th century, in many cases sharing this means of propulsion with an auxiliary engine, it should be noted that the beginnings of steam navigation in Catalonia go back to the 1830s. In 1834 the steamer Rey Don Jaime, better known as the Balear because it covered the Barcelona to Ciutat de Mallorca crossing, began to navigate in Barcelona, and in Tarragona, the customs records indicate the arrival of steam ships from 1838 onwards. Moreover, competition from the railways led to a crisis in maritime transport (in Tarragona the train arrived for the first time on April 12th 1865) providing safety and speed, since there were times when a captain of a llaĂ¼t was even in port for over two weeks waiting for a bonanza.
