The Port of Tarragona registers a good start to the year with more than 3.2 million tons handled

In January traffic increased by 5.8% with agrifood products standing out at more than 800,000 tons

The Port of Tarragona handled 3.2 million tons of cargo compared to 3.07 million tons in January last year, a growth of 5.8%. This growth is mainly due to an increase agrifood traffic, which performed very well in the first month of the year.

Leadership in agrifood

The Port of Tarragona has begun the year by maintaining its leadership in the Mediterranean in the movement of agrifood products with 832,481 tons handled (+112.4%). In specific terms, cereals and flours continued their rate of growth with 564,007 tons handled in January (+125.6%), while feed and forage also performed well with 255,634 tons (+97.7%) handled.

The movement of agrifood products is one of the most significant in the Port of Tarragona, both for its volume, an average of some 5 million tons annually, and for the its major facilities and economic repercussion on the territory.

Traffic diversification

The Port of Tarragona is aware that the diversification of types of traffic allows it to successfully face up to possible circumstantial falls in specific types of traffic and has made a commitment to meet the requirements of different kinds of customers. Thus, in terms of energy products, we can highlight the 77,531 tons of gasoil handled (+99.0%); benzine at 150,042 tons (+1232.0%); petroleum gases (butane and propane) at 161,348 tons (+126.1%) and biofuels at 15.745 tons (196.0%). Crude oil, on the other hand fell to 955,336 tons, a decrease of 14.3%.

In other sectors, adobes accounted for 27,690 tons, phosphates for 13,500 tons and potassium and the rest of the natural and artificial adobes for 5,001 tons (+16.7). In construction materials the total figure was 113,986 tons handled (+15,7%), with cement and clinker particularly noteworthy at 23,103 tons in January (+166,5%).

One of the main objectives of the Port of Tarragona is to maintain the diversification of traffics types in order to contribute to its economic leadership of the territory. The Port’s international vocation seeks to consolidate the import and export rates of the territory’s entrepreneurial fabric to make it one of the main ports for the arrival and departure of goods in the Mediterranean.
