The Port of Tarragona successfully completed an emergency drill involving a cruise ship moored on the Llevant Wharf. The Costa Victoria, belonging to the Costa Crociere line, was the scenario last Friday of a fire drill involving the Tarragona Port Authority, the Harbourmaster, the Catalan Government Fire Service, the Chemical Industry Zone Fire Service, Maritime Safety and Rescue and the Civil Guard Police.
The drill consisted of the simulation of a fire on one of the decks of the cruise ship. It served to confirm the suitable coordination of all the teams involved in the management of the emergency, both on the cruise ship and among the external support teams.
Today in the TPA assembly hall a technical conference was held entitled “Actions in the case of an emergency on cruise ships moored in ports”. It was used to analyse the response of the different agents involved in the drill, the action methodology and the team coordination.
The conference was opened by the president of the Port of Tarragona, Josep Andreu, and was attended by all the teams present during the drill.
The TPA representatives spoke of the Port Self-Protection Plan and the coordination of actions in the case of an emergency.
The Maritime Safety and Rescue representatives explained rescue operations involving vessels with passengers and those from the Harbourmaster referred to safety on cruise ships.
The talk given by the Catalan Government Fire Service dealt with the management of emergency operations on cruise ships, including the evacuation of passengers. Finally, a round table was held with the participation of all the agents involved, in which the drill held last Friday was analysed.
This conference was held as part of the maritime incident operations management programme that has been undertaken for the last four years by the Catalan Government Fire Service with the Port Authority and Maritime Safety and Rescue. The programme is aimed at integrating all the actors that intervene in the resolution of an emergency in a maritime scenario.
