The international cereals market under discussion at the Port of Tarragona

The second edition of the International Agri-food Congress will be held on 10 and 11 May in Tinglado 1 on the Costa Wharf

This coming 10 and 11 May, the Port of Tarragona will be the focal point for the international agri-food sector with the second edition of the International Agri-food Congress, an event organised jointly by the Port of Tarragona and the State Ports Authority. Tarragona is the number one port in the Mediterranean in the handling of bulk agri-food products, with an annual volume of nearly 5 million tons, and it leads the handling of cereals, flours and animal feed in Spain. Moreover, the Tarragona infrastructure is located in the centre of the largest meat producing area in Spain. It is therefore the ideal place to hold this congress. The supply of raw agri-food materials is a decisive factor for the competitiveness of the stockbreeding and poultry production sector logistics chain, and the Port of Tarragona has become a strategic link in this chain.

The first International Agri-food Congress organised by the Port two years ago exceeded all expectations. As a biannual forum, it was extraordinarily well received by the sector and was attended by 250 professionals from the most important firms, as well as receiving the support of major multinational and local firms in the sector. The conference highlighted the need for a forum in which to exchange knowledge and experiences in the areas of production, logistics, nutrition, animal feed, markets and consumers.

The second edition will consolidate this international meeting as a reference for the agri-food sector. Participants will include stevedoring companies, shipping agents, importers, animal feed manufacturers, shippers, quality control companies, etc.

For this edition we have maintained the same format as the first, with a day and half of talks that will take in the concerns of the demand sector. Thus, the programme will deal with world agricultural and stockbreeding production as the first link in the food chain, including the new CAP, the markets, and the competitiveness of our stockbreeding sector. It will also pay special attention to animal nutrition and its strategies to reduce the environmental impact of stockbreeding and the circular economy of the agri-food sector. The programme will be complemented with time set aside for the exchange of information and networking among all the actors.

The organisers believe it is important to place special emphasis on the tendencies of the end-consumer and their new forms of communication, as well as on efficient and sustainable logistics.

To date, some 70 firms from the sector have signed up for the congress, with representatives from the USA, Great Britain, the Ukraine, Belgium, Ireland and Portugal, among others. Places are limited. The International Agri-food Congress once again proves the Port of Tarragona’s role as an economic driving force in the territory, a territory that will also benefit from the international projection offered by this congress.
