This week the Port of Tarragona is taking part in the National Meeting of Cereal Operators (ENOC) held annually in Zaragoza during the International Agricultural Machinery Fair. The conference is organised by the Cereals and Plant Oils Trade Association (ACCOE) and has the support of different associations and some of the main businesses in sector.
Tarragona’s port infrastructure maintains an undisputed leadership in the handling of agri-food products, both in Spain and in the Mediterranean as a whole. It is well placed to contribute to this economic sector thanks to its specialised services and infrastructures that facilitate this type of imports. It is one of the most important categories of cargo handled by the Port of Tarragona, both in terms of the volume –an average of some 5 million tons annually– and the major facilities and economic repercussions it has on the area.
To store these products, the port has some 230,000 m2 of covered area, a figure only equalled by its capacity for storing liquid bulks. Moreover, last October the port inaugurated a regular agri-food rail cargo service from the Port of Tarragona to the Intermodal Terminal at Monzón. This is the first experience of starting up a dry port for agrifood. It will improve the storage capacity of the Tarragona installation in strategic places, facilitating fluidity in the logistics chain.
The high degree of specialisation in agri-food traffic allows the Port of Tarragona to work with a wide variety of agri-food products and sub-products (more than 70), placing our port in a prominent position with respect to the rest of European ports.
