Today, the chairman of the Port of Tarragona, Josep Andreu, accompanied by representatives of the Port community and the Port's Commercial team, has attended the 25th Mediterranean Cereals Market, held in Barcelona. This event brings together the main players in the agri-food sector for the entire Mediterranean basin, ranging from import companies, traders, brokers, feed manufacturers, carriers, etc.
As a leader in the Mediterranean in moving food products, with 5 million tonnes moved annually, the Port of Tarragona collaborates with this event in order to ensure that the Port community’s operators are able to strengthen their commercial activities.
Also attending was a significant representation of companies from the Port of Tarragona’s hinterland that use the Port’s facilities devoted specifically to agri-food products
The Port community’s high degree of specialisation
One of the added values of the Port of Tarragona is the Port community’s high degree of specialisation, as well as excellent land communications, by both road and rail, with the consumer hinterland. In total there are 560.702 sq. metres of surface area in the Port devoted to the traffic in agri-food products, and with a storage capacity of 1.3 million tonnes. The Port of Tarragona has five terminals specialising in moving this type of traffic, and the average productivity is 500 tonnes moved per hour.
Paperless Release streamlines and optimises productivity in transport logistics. Paperless Release is a system that eliminates customs procedures and aids the administrative processing for controlling goods that have to leave and enter the Port, thus reducing the service’s handling time.
In addition, the Port of Tarragona becomes a connecting point between the commodity being imported, to feed the sheep and beef farmed in the hinterland (area of influence), and a proportion of these animals subsequently exported, also via the Port of Tarragona, destined for countries in Northern Africa.
