The Archive Territory Conference, organised jointly by the Port of Tarragona Archive and Arqueologia del Punt de Vista, was conceived with the intention of being held every two years to bring together those experiences that capture new ways of seeing archives. Because archives are not, or should not be, static or immovable. On the contrary, they are, or should be, changing entities able to adapt to new situations, new documents and new citizens’ demands. They should be able to satisfy all the needs that may arise and, above all, they should be able to transmit them to the society around them, highlighting at the same time their testimonial value.
Hence the name of the conference, Archive Territory, because the aim is to present and debate, where appropriate, the limits that make up archives –the changing perspectives, diversity and plural perception– to avoid unwanted exclusions.
All these aspects need to be revised and include all the new developments that help us grow as professionals and as centres that guarantee the memory and living testimony of society. The First Archive Territory Conference was held in Tarragona on 27 October 2022. It was structured in two sessions. The first, in the morning, consisted of presentations by two people intrinsically linked to the world of archives, although in different ways: Joan Boadas, Girona municipal archivist, and Susanna Muriel, an independent archivist specialising in family and photographic archives.
In the afternoon session, which was held at the Teatret del Serrallo, we were able to see and hear four experiences from Jaume Cardona, creator of La Makineta del temps and a specialist in portraits of abandoned spaces; Mario Pons, screenwriter and audiovisual producer; Jero Rodríguez and Miguel Atienza, hosts of Spanish Television’s Cachitos de Hierro y Plomo; and Shaday Larios, specialist in the theatre of documentary objects. All five are highly knowledgeable of the world of archives and they spoke to us of their experiences and their creations. The Archive Territory Conference, which had the participation of around forty professionals from different fields, ended with a performance by the Improacatomba company, specialists in improvisational theatre.
The Second Archive Territory Conference is planned for 2024

The year 2019, coinciding with International Archives Day, saw the premiere of this innovative activity in the archive world (then in presential format) co-organized with Auriga Cultural Services.
As a result of the pandemic and the limitation of presence activities, this 2021 has been chosen by the digital formula with the aim of reaching as much as possible audience.
To save the archivist, a series of darxienigmas must be solved using all possible wit and imagination to overcome the challenge. The aims to offer a different proposal to bring the Archive closer to the citizens while also making known some of the spaces of the Portst Archive.
“Tuesdays at the Archive” is the Port of Tarragona Archive’s dissemination proposal begun in 2016. Once a quarter, it aims to bring subjects of interest to the attention of the public. Themes include the port, history and the sea, as well as the world of archives itself. The presentations can be in different formats: talks, guided tours, workshops, book presentations, etc. Here are some past Tuesdays at the Archive:
Talk: “Daily life in a lighthouse. Tarragona’s lighthouses and lighthouse keepers” by David Moré Aguirre, archivist and lighthouse historian.
Workshop: “How to organise and conserve the photographs in our family album” by Susanna Muriel, archivist specialising in photographic collections.
Guided tour: : “A walk round La Pedrera, the new town and the Port” with Ramon Aloguín, architect.
Workshop: “Document Conservation. Introduction and basic principles” by Anna Ferran, picture and archive material conservator-restorer.
Rephotography workshop: “Traces and destruction. A journey through the interior of the photographs of the Civil War in the Port of Tarragona” by Ricard Martínez, photographer.
L’Arxiu del Port ha col·laborat en l’organització, muntatge i difusió de les exposicions que a continuació us detallem.
In November 2011, with the aim of publicizing the wealth and variety of documents that are part of our collection, the activity is initiated. The document of the month is a small virtual exhibition that made itself known through the website and social channels Archive.
Over more than a 4-year period of activity, the selection criteria have been different although often giving importance to what the document represents, to its recentness or to the holding of events. 50 Port documents took the leading role and are now at your fingertips. (If you need the Spanish version, please contact the Archive).
