The dissemination
The Port Museum of Tarragona began in the year 2000 with aim of preserving and sharing the maritime heritage of our coast and, more specifically, the City’s port heritage. As such, visitors may experience the day-to-day life of a commercial, fishing, and leisure port such as Tarragona. The Museum aims to be a space where citizens may explore and understand how our Port, which has been the economic motor for the Tarragona area throughout history, works.

La Vitrina

Temporary Exhibitions
We organise different types of events and activities with the aim of explaining our centre.
Small format, in the Museum foyer, with the generic name, 'Compartindo la mar' (Sharing the sea with) Every three months, there are exhibitions of both historical images of the Port, and of the people who have participated in the Museum’s Instagram competitions. There are also objects which do not form part of the permanent exhibition, as well as collaborations with other cultural institutions. Our exhibitions are always on maritime themes.
Large format, in the exhibition spaces of the Moll de Costa (Coast dock) As you pass along the Coast dock and the Llevant dock, you can appreciate the 4-kilometre Heritage Route of the Port of Tarragona, comprising a twenty port infrastructures (cranes, buildings, vessels) and the corresponding panels with explanations in Catalan, Spanish and English. You have an interactive map where you can consult the location and description of each element in the Route.

Heritage Route
The Port Museum aims to bring the cultural, historical, and landscape heritage of the Port closer to the citizens via this initiative. The Route can be followed on foot or by bicycle, and reflects the historical and cultural importance of the spaces through which it takes place. It represents an interesting alternative as a free time activity.
The Serrallo, a place for stories
This project has counted on the support of the fishing and restaurant communities of the neighbourhood. Interviews have been held with people working on the sea, and in the world of fish and seafood cuisine: skippers, cooks, and current restaurant owners.
The collection ‘Petit Museu’ forms part of the project, started in autumn 2011, with the title, ‘The Serrallo, a place for stories: the memory of the fishers’. This initiative of the Public Library of Tarragona in collaboration with the Port Museum of Tarragona has the aim of recovering the intangible heritage of the Serrallo, Tarragona’s Port neighbourhood.

Traditionally we talk about longlin hake due to its good quality and appearance thanks to the type of fishing; longlin. In this story we talk about this fishery and also about the presence of loggerhead turtles on our Miracle beach.
VICENTA, LA PEIXETERA, VENEDORA DE PEIX A TARRAGONA.
Description
After explaining the types of fisheries we now explain the auction of the fish and its sale to the fishmongers of the market. A trade, traditionally, at the hands of the women that Vicenta tells us how she began and the great party of her retirement at the stop where she gave the culinary recipes of the Serrallo kitchen to her clientele.

Description
This is the story of a boy who wants to be a sailor, like his father, a skipper. One day, a net gets caught up in the propeller of the boat and the boy falls into the sea, still wearing his waterproof coat. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot swim back to the boat, so he takes off the red waterproof coat, a present from his mother, in order to be able to swim back to the boat, and safety.

Descripció
Ramon the ranch-hand is the main character of this story, dedicated to cuisine. The boy’s grandfather, having been a sailor himself, is now the cook at the restaurant ‘El Romesco’. In this restaurant, Ramon spends many a long afternoon listening to sea stories, and how his grandfather learnt to make romesco sauce and fish dishes.

Description
Night fishing, using the encircling technique, is the theme of the third story of the Petit Museu collection. John, ‘The Little Anchovy, is a boy in charge of a boat with lights, and the story explains the dreams he has one night about dolphins, while the fish enter the nets.
The work carried out by women in the Serrallo is explaied by Dolores, the repairer of nets. While the men go to sea to catch fish, the women repaired equipment and made tools for different types of fishing, as well as doing the housework and looking after the children. But not all boys could go to sea, and some of them stay on land, helping to repair the nets.

The educational service of the Museum aims to present, to school-age students who visit the Port, different aspects of daily life in a commercial, fishing and leisure port such as that of Tarragona. There are also leisure educational activities for families, which can be organised by making a reservation
