CULTURAL SPACE | Architecture and exhibition design go hand in hand in the new museum project

Since summer 2020, the Port has been working on a comprehensive rehabilitation of the city’s cultural and historical space. After almost a year, the work has culminated in the conversion of a warehouse built in the first decades of the twentieth century into a modern exhibition space for the Port’s heritage collection. It is now a new and exciting museum thanks to its advanced audiovisual and interactive resources.

This is an ideal building in which to display the port's heritage collection, given the large volume of many of the pieces on display. The breadth of space offered by this former warehouse has allowed us to propose an integrative discourse with the exhibits.

For many years now, the Port has devoted the facilities on the Costa Wharf to civic and cultural uses and, over the years, it has been responsible for recovering and safeguarding the maritime and port heritage of our coast.
We present a journey through the history of the port from the time the Romans first landed to the present day. The exhibits tell us of life on the docks, the types of fishing, sporting activities, and the vessels and cargos linked to our seas.

CONTAINER AND CONTENT COMPLETELY RENEWED TO PROJECT THE MUSEUM INTO THE FUTURE

The new museography awakens the senses and transports the visitor to the past and present of the Port and the Serrallo fishing quarter

The refurbishment took a year and cost two and a half million euros

The Joint Commission of the 7th Collaboration Agreement between the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Culture for Joint Action on Historical Heritage awarded 1.75 million euros towards the financing of the new museum

On Saturday 17 July 2021, the Port of Tarragona inaugurated the new Port Museum, an exciting and attractive museographic offer open to the general public.

The latest technological advances in museography help to awaken all your senses and immerse you in the world of the sea and the Port’s past and present.

It should be added that there was a more festive and social part to the inauguration of the Museum with the participation of Tarragona’s folklore elements. They brought a note of colour to an important moment in the tour of the civic and cultural facilities.

During the summer the Port will organise a series of guided tours so that everyone who is interested can get to know the new Port Museum.

Details will be published in the activities agenda on this website and on the @PortTarragona social media.

The Port of Tarragona invites you to immerse yourself in a new space that will undoubtedly awaken all you senses.

Josep Maria Cruset, president of Port Tarragona | “The reform of the museum, both the building and the exhibitive discourse, will serve to give new impetus to a Port Museum that, over more than 20 years, has welcomed thousands of local residents and tourists”
Laura Borrás, President of the Parliament of Catalonia highlighted the fact that “with good judgment, cultural ambition and the social awareness with which to undertake major projects, you have built a narrative about Tarragona’s links to the sea throughout its history. It is an invitation to discover the dimension and significance, both human and collective, of this port and all ports”.

We would like to express our thanks to the visitors, professionals, and benefactors, their collaboration over the years. The contributions of all of these people have allowed the Museum to exhibit, create, show, explain, and, above all, preserve the maritime and port heritage of our coast.
