The movement of steel products has experienced significant growth in the Port of Tarragona over the past 10 years.
Most of the products in this group correspond to the import/export of coils, rolled products, profiles and beams, used as raw materials for the automobile and construction industry. Another significant item corresponds to scrap metal and metal remains.
In order to handle such cargos, the Port’s various terminals and facilities are equipped with highly specialised machinery such as high capacity cranes, high tonnage forklift trucks, etc.
For storing these products, the Port has an extensive and well-connected infrastructure, located mainly in the Aragó, Navarra and Andalusia docks.
In particular, the port has direct rail access to the freight handling warehouses, allowing freight directly to the train with the warehouse cranes
The Port of Tarragona import and exports steel products to 30 countries around the world, a positive indication of the internationalisation of this traffic.
The increase in the attraction of steel product traffic, closely related to the automobile and construction industries, is a significant demonstration of the Port of Tarragona’s commitment to traffic diversification.
GONVARRI has been installed in our port for more than 20 years. Its facilities include pickling and hot rolled cutting lines. It can cut steel coils up to 25mm thick and 2.10 mm wide, an ability within the reach of very few. The only other company with this manufacturing capacity is in Belgium.
The production and logistics process is fully digitised and connected. It has crane bridges with integrated digital scales and the incorporation of artificial intelligence and robotisation. A further definitive advantage is having its own railway terminal on the premises. Rail is the main means used to ship its products to the rest of its plants in Spain.
In addition, its facilities are a designated Public Customs Warehouse, allowing the storage of imported goods before customs clearance.
