The Port of Tarragona will receive more than 7,000 cruise passengers this week

The Port of Tarragona will receive more than 7,000 cruise passengers this week

The TPA still expects to reach a total of 110,000 cruise passengers this year

The Port of Tarragona will receive three cruise liners this week carrying 7,391 tourists who will make a one-day stopover in the city. The arrival of three cruises in the port between Wednesday and Sunday this week will mean that the city and other tourist attractions in the area will have an exceptionally large number of visitors from cruise ships.

The largest number of passengers will come from Costa Cruise Lines vessels. The Costa NeoRiviera with 1,727 passengers will arrive this Wednesday 24 July for a 7 hour stay and the Costa Fortuna will disembark 3,470 passengers this coming Sunday for a stopover of 12 hours.

The tourists travelling with Costa Cruise Lines who stopover in Tarragona are mainly Italian (46%), French (22%) and German (7%), according to the data compiled so far for this season. Costa passengers are offered a wide variety of excursions and activities in Tarragona and the rest of the Costa Daurada. The excursions offered on board the Costa Cruise Lines vessels are to Tarragona; Reus and Cambrils; the beaches of Salou; the Celler Adernats winery; Poblet and surroundings; PortAventura theme park; Ferrari Land theme park; Costa Caribe water park; and the city of Barcelona.

The third of the cruise liners to dock this week will be the Marella Explorer 2 belonging to Marella Cruises. This vessel will dock in the port on Friday 26 July for a 7-hour stopover. The Marella Explorer 2 will be carrying 1,924 passengers, mainly of British (96%) and Irish (3%) nationality. In this case, the excursions offered on board will be to Tarragona; Poblet; Reus and Cambrils; Altafulla; PortAventura; and Barcelona.

The total number of passengers on this week’s three cruise liners will be exactly 7,391, one of the highest weekly figures so far, even more so if we take into account that they will all arrive in just five days, between 24 and 28 July. This figure has in large part been made possible by Costa Cruise Line’s decision to make Tarragona the base port for the Costa Fortuna, the largest liner to dock so far in the port of Tarragona (103,000 tons, 272 metres length and 17 floors, 13 of the which are for passenger accommodation and facilities).

The total number of cruise passengers expected this year is 110,000, some 10,000 more than in 2018. If the current trend continues, this figure will be achieved and will further contribute to consolidating the Port of Tarragona’s aim
to become a reference port for cruise liners in the Mediterranean.
