One of the main international cargo transport, logistics and overseas trade fairs

The Port of Tarragona has been at the 24th edition of Intermodal South America in Sao Paulo (Brazil). The aim was to promote its commitment to diversification and general cargo, a strategy that produced very good results in 2017, both in traffic and economic data. The port infrastructure was represented by its president, Josep Andreu, and marketing director, Genoveva Climent, who held meetings with fruit producers from the Fortaleza area and with major shipping lines including CMA CGM Brazil and MSC Brazil. Meetings were also held with various forwarding agents.

During the trade fair, one of the most important in South America for cargo transport, logistics and overseas trade, the local delegation detected a growing interest in the Port of Tarragona, specifically for such cargos as paper pulp and project cargo.

With a wide variety of exhibitors from all over the world, Intermodal South America is considered by the sector’s executives as a strategic platform for the generation of new business. For three days, it brings together the main actors from national and international markets, fostering business and associations that serve as a platform for launches, brand reinforcement, joint ventures, sales, content and networking. The Tarragona infrastructure was represented at this trade fair on the Spanish State Ports stand.

Commitment to intermodality

The Port of Tarragona presents its intermodal strategy as a key element in its international projection as a Mediterranean logistics hub. The efficient connection between the different modes of transport is the port’s major objective for the coming years, in order to consolidate its positioning. This is why it is presenting a very competitive logistics proposal with efficient services.

Key infrastructure

The Port of Tarragona’s ‘La Boella’ intermodal terminal is open to all the businesses in the region that wish to make a commitment to rail transport. It can handle mixed-gauge (IUR and Iberian) trains up 750 m long and is located next to the DP World container terminal, which allows cost-effective ship to train container movements.

Another strong point in its favour is that it is also very close to the inspection and customs zones. The layout of the areas involved in intermodal logistics gives the port a first-class, competitive and agile infrastructure.

The Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL) is another of the strategic projects the Port of Tarragona is working on. With an area of 100 ha, the ZAL is essential for the port to be able to assume logistics operations of greater added value, as well the loading and unloading of cargo. Undertaking these new activities will require larger logistics centres and, therefore, it is necessary to build logistics zones that can host these activities in an area near the port. That is the ZAL.

Moreover, this logistics centre will have direct rail access so that trains can enter this area, facilitating more efficient movements from the container terminal.
