The Port of Tarragona leads the ‘best port’ ranking, according to automobile companies

2017

It is the third year in a row that Tarragona has maintained first position in the ANFAC study classification

According to the annual report on "Assessment of Maritime-Port Logistics" prepared by ANFAC (Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Automóviles y Camiones – Spanish Association of Automobile and Lorry Manufacturers), the Port of Tarragona leads the best port ranking, together with the port of Santander, with a rating of 4.3 over 5. This report contains the assessment that the associated logistical service companies make of ports for traffic in new vehicles. This year the study reaches its tenth edition.

According to the data from STATE PORTS, in 2016 the automobile sector transported more than 3.2 million new vehicles through Spanish ports, which represents a 12% increase over 2015. The eight ports that are rated in the report represent 90% of this traffic. This increase has been possible due to two main factors: on the one hand, the excellent progress in the production of vehicles, and on the other, the increase in the internal market. These are the reasons that explain this growth in the transport of vehicles and parts in the Port’s activity.

In 2016 the total volume of transported vehicles came to 5.4 million, with maritime transport being the highest quota with almost 44%. Shipping is therefore established as a fundamental mode of transport for the automotive sector

Exponential growth in vehicle traffic

Vehicle traffic in the Port of Tarragona has experienced an exponential growth in recent years. It is the sixth in volume of vehicles transported. Over 152,000 units were moved in 2016.

With regard to this year's figures, so far in 2017 the Port has registered a growth of over 25% in traffic (134,000 units up to August), which promises very good prospects for the end of year balance.
