Tarragona and Global Ports Holding have brought together industry professionals to explain the Tarragona-Costa Daurada and the advantages of Tarragona Cruise Port

This Tuesday 26 April the Port of Tarragona presented its new cruise project at the international Seatrade Cruise Global fair in Miami (USA) in an event held at the Global Ports Holding (GPH) stand. The joint event at Seatrade Cruise was led by the Tarragona Port Authority (APT) president, Josep M. Cruset, and the Global Ports Holding CEO, H. Emre Sayin, and served to present the new partnership that began in March of this year. The project involves the building of a new cruise terminal on the Balears Wharf due to go into operation in summer 2023.

Global Ports Holding, which operates the largest cruise liners in the world, is the official contractor for the Tarragona cruise service and will build a new cruise terminal on the Balears Wharf in the Port. The agreement, signed in January 2022, formalises Global Ports Holding as a concessionaire for 12 years to manage cruise passengers services in Tarragona. GPH will build an innovative, efficient, sustainable, state-of-the-art terminal with a planned investment of 5.5 million euros.

Emre Sayin stated “we are delighted to have been chosen as the operator for a port with such great potential. Tarragona is truly a beautiful destination with excellent connections. We look forward to highlighting its history and culture, while building a new, environmentally friendly terminal that will complement the port and the destination”.

Josep Maria Cruset, President Port of Tarragona, commented: “The partnership with Global Ports consolidates the cruise project in the Port of Tarragona. His experience and professionalism will help to relaunch this activity in Tarragona and recover the pre-pandemic results in two years. We are happy that, from now on, Tarragona will be available to more visitors from all over the world."

For its part, Port of Tarragona explained the main attractions of Tarragona and the Costa Daurada as a tourist destination and the potential of Tarragona's port facilities, including the new Baleares Wharf. This dock was built in a year and a half at a cost of 30 million euros. A multi-purpose infrastructure inaugurated in October 2021, it added 700 metres to the space available for cruise liner mooring, as well as allowing for much more convenient and agile operations. It represents a qualitative improvement for cruise activity, as it makes it possible to host larger vessels and allows more ships to tie up simultaneously (up to 4 cruise liners).
