Tomorrow and Friday the Port of Tarragona is hosting the first international congress of the agri-food sector. Agrifood International Congress has the support of large multinationals in the sector and has exceeded forecast expectations, with over 200 professionals from around the world gathering in Dock Shed 1 on the Port of Tarragona’s Moll de Costa dock.

This congress, organised jointly with the State Ports, will provide an opportunity for the major companies that make up the agri-food sector to meet: stevedoring companies, shipping agents, importers, manufacturers of feedstuffs, shippers, control companies, etc.

The sponsors of this conference are Bergé Marítima, Ership, DP World Tarragona, Arola, Euroports, Noatum CODEMER, Algeposa, Cargill, Invivo Trading and Sitasa. In addition, the collaborating companies are Nidera, IQS, Control Union, Intertek, Gavilon, Riera Roura, SGS, Alfaship, Bon Area, Louis Dreyfus Company, USSEC, ADM and Glencore Spain.

Programme of the Agrifood International Congress

The Port of Tarragona has developed a work programme that includes the most relevant aspects that affect or will affect the whole agro-industrial sector in the future, such as European legislation, food safety, the transatlantic trade and investment agreement, production and, above all, logistics in all its forms; all at the hands of US representatives, who will provide market information, as well as experts in the agri-food policy of the European Union, who will also participate as speakers to talk about the sector.

The Agrifood International Congress will also discuss production and logistics, and also flour industry companies. The programme is complemented with visits to the facilities of the Guissona Agricultural Cooperative and to the facilities of the Port of Tarragona, also devoting extensive time for the exchange of information and networking between all the stakeholders that form part of this sector. One of the goals of this international event is to strengthen personal relationships, since this will enable those involved to do business in the future.

Opening and closing ceremonies

The inauguration of the Agrifood International Congress tomorrow at 4:00 pm in Dock Shed 1 of the Moll de Costa dock will be at the hands of the Catalan Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Josep Rull, the Chairman of State Ports, José Llorca; the Chairman of the Port of Tarragona, Josep Andreu, and a representative of Tarragona City Council. The Minister of Development, Ana Pastor, will close the congress on Friday, April 15th at 4:30 pm.

The most specialised port in the agri-food sector

The Port of Tarragona maintains an undisputed leadership in the movement of food products, both in Spain and in the Mediterranean, contributing to this economic activity thanks to the specialised services and infrastructure that aid importing. The Port’s high degree of specialisation in agri-food traffic enables the Port of Tarragona to work with a wide variety of agri-food products (more than 70) and by-products, which situates the Port in a very prominent position compared to the rest of European ports.

40% of the total production of feed from Spain is manufactured in the Port of Tarragona’s hinterland (comprising Catalonia and Aragon), and this raw material is imported through the Port of Tarragona.
