The Port of Tarragona grows 6.9% during the month of May

In the first five months of the year, agri-food products continued their spectacular growth, currently at 66.6%, with cereals and their flours (+167.3%) particularly outstanding

The Port of Tarragona recorded a growth of 6.9% during the month of May, exceeding the figure of 2.8 million tons handled (loaded and unloaded). In the accumulated figure for the first five months of 2018, the increase is 6.8% and already exceeds 14 million tons (14.3Mt).

If we break down the figures, of particular note is the growth in solid bulks (+112%), with more than 946 thousand tons handled during May. In general cargo, the increase was 7.5%, with 222 thousand tons handled. Containerised traffic also recorded an increase of 40%. Liquid bulks in May accounted for 1.6 million tons, a reduction of 16.5% due to the technical shutdown of the Repsol refinery.

Agri-food hub

Looking at the data by cargo type, in the accumulated figure for the year (January-May), particularly outstanding were agri-food products (2.4Mt), with an increase of 66.6%, with cereals and their flours being the fastest-growing traffic (+167.3%) at 1.7 million tons. In addition, we have to emphasise the traffic in fruit, vegetables and pulses, with an increase of 97.3% and a total of 92.101 tons handled.

On the other hand, the traffic in paper and paper pulp continues its upward trend, with a growth of 54% and a total of 256,362 tons handled. As far as non-metallic minerals are concerned, the increase is maintained with 101.6%, with common salt being especially noteworthy with a growth of 126.2%. In chemical products, another outstanding category, the increase was 5.2%.

In more specific traffics, such as vehicles and live animals, part of the Port’s cargo diversification policy, vehicle traffic remained stable with 89,196 units handled in the category of standard family cars during the first five months of the year, and that of live animals registered a movement of 83,231 head embarked. In the area of cruise ships, during the first five months of 2018 seventeen vessels made stopovers in the port (+240%) bringing 21,304 passengers (+1175.7%).

From January to May, 1,109 merchant vessels sailed from the Port of Tarragona.
