Cereals and their flours, paper pulp, chemical products, common salt and livestock are the traffic types that have achieved the best figures

The Port of Tarragona has recorded a growth of 5.4% in the first quarter of the year, with 8.5 million tons handled. Solid bulks increased by 20.7% (2.7 Mt) in the accumulated data for the first three months, with a major increase of 62.7% (1.4 Mt) in cereals, animal feed and flours. If we look solely at the figures for March, the increase in this type of cargo is also considerable – 101.3%. In terms of general cargo, there was an increase of 21.6% in the first quarter (525,299 t). In contrast, liquid bulks fell slightly by 2.6% in the first three months, although crude petroleum rose by 6.6% (2.4 Mt).

Growth in agri-foods

With just fifteen days to go before the International Agri-food Congress, the most important international agri-food products event in the Port of Tarragona, the data for traffic of this type of cargo could not be better, in both monthly and quarterly terms. During the first three months of the year, the movement of cereals and their flours increased by 158.8% with respect to the same period last year. In monthly terms, the increase in March was 101.3%.

Chemical products (+13%) and common salt (+122.7%) also presented good results, as did asphalt (+3.3%) and cement (+39.1%), with notable increases. Paper pulp was also up by a significant 93.5%, and vehicles increased by 2.3%. Finally, the traffic in livestock increased by 13.3%, with 31,762 head of sheep and cattle passing through the Port of Tarragona during the first quarter of the year.
