In 2000, the Tarragona Port Authority launched a new cultural activity through the Port of Tarragona’s Centre for Maritime Studies and Activities, namely:
THE PORT OF TARRAGONA MUSEUM
The civic and cultural use to which the port already devoted the Costa Dock provided a solid argument for locating the new facility there. An old shelter warehouse was transformed to house the permanent exhibition, and, true to its surroundings, the museum has been recovering and safeguarding the region’s port and maritime heritage ever since.
Visitors to the museum are invited to take a tour of the port’s history, from the landing of the ancient Romans through to today. Life on the docks, the different fishing techniques, recreational activities, ships and the types of freight found in the Mediterranean are all also explored.
In 2003, the museum was enlarged to include the Banya Lighthouse, which houses a permanent collection of objects related to maritime signals.
