Extension of the East Dike
A promenade resting on the sea
This construction finalizes the fifth alignment of the dike, on which work has been carried out almost continuously for the last 2 centuries, although specific circumstances and economical cycles have resulted in these alignments having different characteristics giving the dike its final, overall arrangement.
This final 830-meter extension will give the Escullera Dike a total length of 4580 meters, ensuring the protection of the port and the economical activities that take place there. This is a substantial project entailing an investment of nigh on 50 million euros, jointly funded by the EU Cohesion Fund. This in all likelihood will be the last extension of the dike. Environmental and other considerations will result in the port developing henceforth according to a new, considerably different growth model in line with new requirements aimed at meeting the demands of a competitive society under constant development.
The East Dike extension benefits from a financial contribution from the European Union. The Cohesion Fund has put forward EUR 22,587,904 for the work. This substantial sum accounts for 50% of the total investment made.
The work involves the construction of an 800-meter-long rubble-mound breakwater, extending the final stretch of the current dike. Following acceptance of the bid submitted by the company NECSO-COPCISA, the section will consist of a vertical breakwater built using concrete blocks, resting on a rubble-mound bedding.
The project helps to reduce social and economic disparities amoung European Union citizens
